Walk into a big-box store and you'll find construction plywood and maybe some oak plywood. Walk into a professional cabinet shop and you'll see something completely different. Here's what Tampa cabinet shops actually use — and what we stock at Craftsmen Supply Center.

What We Actually Stock

Let's cut to the chase. Here's what professionals buy from us:

Import Birch Plywood (C-2 Grade)

This is our bread and butter for cabinet boxes. Import birch offers excellent value with consistent quality — and we take it a step further with prefinished options that save you time and money:

ThicknessFinishBest For
1/4"Prefinished 1-sideCabinet backs, drawer bottoms
3/4"Prefinished 1-sideCabinet sides, boxes — most common
1/2"Prefinished 2-sideDrawer boxes, visible interiors
3/4"Prefinished 2-sideOpen shelving, display cabinets

Why prefinished? Because your time is money. Cut your pieces, assemble, install. No sanding, no finishing, no waiting for finish to cure. The factory finish is consistent, durable, and ready to go. For cabinet interiors and drawer boxes, prefinished birch is simply the smartest choice.

Door-Grade MDF (3/4")

This isn't the MDF you find at home centers. Our 3/4" door-grade MDF is manufactured to a higher standard — just below exterior-grade HDF. It's:

  • Moisture resistant: Stable in Florida's humidity, suitable for refrigerator end panels
  • Dead flat: No warping, no cupping — critical for painted slab doors
  • Dense and uniform: Takes paint beautifully with no grain telegraphing

Creative Uses for Door-Grade MDF

While it's designed for painted slab doors, pros use it creatively:

  • 5-piece doors: Cut into rails and stiles for shaker or raised panel doors — works like solid lumber
  • Face frame material: Rip into strips, use pilot holes or pocket screws — inexpensive paint-grade alternative to poplar
  • Refrigerator panels: The moisture resistance and flatness make it ideal for these high-profile panels

You won't find this grade of MDF at big-box stores. It's a professional product through and through.

Premium Hardwood Veneers

Here's where we really set ourselves apart. Big-box stores carry red oak plywood and maybe maple. We stock selected grades and veneer cuts that professionals actually want:

SpeciesVeneer CutBest For
WalnutPlain slicedHigh-end furniture, feature panels
White OakPlain slicedModern cabinets, waterfall edges
Red OakPlain slicedTraditional cabinets, stain-grade work
Hard MapleClear/selectPainted cabinets, light natural finishes

These aren't special orders with 2-week lead times. They're in our racks, ready to walk out the door.

What You Won't Find at Big-Box Stores

Let's be direct about what sets us apart:

  • Prefinished plywood: Big-box stores don't carry it. We stock it in four configurations.
  • Door-grade MDF: Their MDF is construction grade. Ours is furniture grade.
  • Walnut plywood: Good luck finding it at a home center.
  • White oak plywood: Increasingly popular, but not at big-box prices or availability.
  • Plain sliced veneers: Most stores carry rotary cut (the cheapest option). Plain sliced has the grain character people actually want.
  • Clear maple: Not the mineral-streaked stuff — clean, consistent veneer.

Built for Tampa Professionals

We've served thousands of professionals bringing their clients' visions to life:

  • Custom kitchen cabinets: From spec homes to high-end remodels
  • Furniture makers: One-off pieces that need the right material
  • Architectural paneling: Wall panels, wainscoting, feature walls
  • Hard-to-find veneers: When the project calls for something specific

Our Manufacturer Network

Need something we don't stock? We have relationships with manufacturers across the country. Exotic veneers, specific core types, unusual thicknesses — if it exists, we can source it. This is what separates a real lumber supplier from a home center.

Florida Climate Considerations

Tampa's 74% average humidity affects all panel products:

  • Acclimation: Let panels sit in your shop 48-72 hours before cutting
  • Storage: Store flat with support every 16-18" — vertical storage invites warping
  • Edge sealing: Our prefinished birch has sealed faces but exposed edges still need attention

Frequently Asked Questions

1 What is prefinished plywood and why would I want it?

Prefinished plywood comes with a durable factory finish on one or both faces. No sanding, no finishing, no drying time. Cut, assemble, install. For cabinet interiors and drawer boxes, it saves hours of labor per project.

2 Can I use MDF for face frames?

Yes, but it requires technique. Rip your strips, drill pilot holes or use pocket screws — MDF doesn't hold screws like wood, so pre-drilling is essential. It's an economical paint-grade option if you know what you're doing.

3 Why door-grade MDF instead of regular MDF?

Door-grade MDF is denser, flatter, and moisture resistant. It's manufactured to a higher standard — just below exterior-grade HDF. Regular MDF from home centers can swell in Florida's humidity and isn't stable enough for quality painted doors.

4 Do you carry Baltic Birch?

We focus on import birch prefinished for cabinet boxes, which offers the best value for most applications. Baltic Birch is available — ask us about current stock or special orders if you need all-birch plies for visible edges.

5 Can you source specialty veneers?

Yes. We have relationships with manufacturers across the country. If you need a specific species, veneer cut, or core type, we can source it. This is what separates a professional supplier from a home center.
